what do you think is a better form of self defense or exercise?

I am interested in taking up either Brazilian Jujitsu or Capoeira.I cant really choose between the two and need a little bit of advice as to which would be a better activity to take upon. I’m 18 and would like to get fit and have fun doing it I also have Diabetes so i need to stay in shape and fit for more health reasons besides just for physical appearances. Also are they possibly any classes of both that are combined or together? So any advice would be appreciated! thanks ![]()
Juijitsu or Judo as commonly understood is a far better form of martial art for self defense and in particular for women. In Judo the muscles are relaxed, supple and at the same time firm and strong. The whole body becomes flexible and agile. Acquire strength, stamina, speed, composure. Mind is peaceful and calm but alert. It is an exercise for both body and mind and I would certainly recommend. Only thing to be careful in Judo is Dojo (the mat) on floor should not move away while throws are applied. It can be harmful. The falling techniques have to be correctly mastered before throws are attempted, otherwise in the long run it will affect the disks of the backbone if ununusual jerks and shocks are given to the backbone. Another aspect to be remembered is that you should not allow yourself to be excessively used as a practice equipment by senior judoka.
Jui Jitsu is a completely defense form of martial art whereas Capoeira is more offensive in content. In Capoeira headbutts, handstrikes, elbowstrikes, knee strikes, punches etc are used like in Karate or Thaikondo whereas in judo throws, graples, chokes, folds are the main techniques of defense. Capoeira is martial art techniques camouflaged in art form and dance and therefore have more fun and would have lost its offensive purpose now to a method of entertainment. I have seen these forms performed somewhere in Africa. I do not know it is the same way they do it in South America.
The exercise in both the cases are rigorous and I am not certain your diabetis will be able to sustain that. I would suggest you more of Yoga than martial art in that case. Because, yoga would be more curative. With best wishes.

Type 2 diabetes can be prevented or delayed by making lifestyle changes that include weight loss and more physical activity. In this video, people with prediabetes talk about how group lifestyle change classes offered as part of CDC’s National Diabetes Prevention Program helped them learn and keep healthy habits. Lifestyle coaches, a physician and Ann Albright, PhD, RD, director of CDC’s Division of Diabetes Translation, discuss how group lifestyle classes offer an effective way to prevent type 2 diabetes. Research trials have shown that such classes can reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes by nearly 60% in people at high risk for developing the disease.
